S2Strategic was founded by Brett Sangster, whose deep expertise in Defence and National Security is grounded in both military and commercial experience. A graduate of the Royal Military College Duntroon, Brett served as an Army Officer during a peak operational period, including time within Special Operations Command and multiple deployments to the Middle Eastern Area of Operations.

Following his military career, Brett held senior legal and executive roles across leading law firms and ASX-100 companies. Brett recognised that organisations operating in Defence environments were often receiving fragmented advice: legal, commercial or operational, but rarely something integrated and executable. As a Partner at McCullough Robertson, he established and grew a Defence & National Security Practice to bridge this gap.

What started as a specialised Defence & National Security practice grew steadily over five years, building a strong client base across Australia, the US and the UK. As the work deepened, so too did the realisation that clients needed more than legal advice; they needed strategy-led support grounded in operational reality.

This led to the next phase of growth, with the business expanding beyond the legal model and attracting private equity backing to scale its capabilities at Aurizn Group.

After a further period of growth, the business was reacquired by Brett to form a dedicated National Security advisory firm. Today, S2Strategic provides strategy-led, practical advice to organisations operating in complex, high-assurance environments. With capabilities spanning governance, risk, compliance and law, the firm supports clients across the national security ecosystem to strengthen sovereign capability and engage confidently with Defence and industry partners. While managing the S2Strategic front, Brett is also a partner at Gadens Lawyers, bringing a truly end-to-end commercial and legal capability.
